SV-1 is a device designed specifically for experiments requiring a vocal response. SV-1 monitors the participant's voice level at all times, and when the level rises above a user-specified threshold, it reports this to the computer.

The first such device to be developed for over a decade, SV-1 packs some advanced features such as:

  • Built-in timer.
    For example, at the onset of a trial, the computer can reset the timer in SV-1. When SV-1 detects a voice key, it informs the computer and reports the participant's reaction time with a guaranteed accuracy of 1 millisecond.
  • Advanced Technology
    SV-1 is powered by an 18 MHz microprocessor and is a 100% digital device. It uses Cedrus' XID technology.
  • Controls Lock
    Thanks to its digital design, after adjusting the dials to the correct levels you can use the computer to "lock" them. This makes them ineffective and prevents accidental tampering.
  • Serial and Parallel Ports
    SV-1 offers both a serial and a parallel port for maximum connectivity. USB support can be added via an inexpensive USB-serial port adaptor.
  • Flexible Accessory Connector
    The built-in Accessory Connector provides six lines of I/O (input/output). Each line can individually be configured as either input or output.

SV-1 comes with a microphone headset (see picture above) and a one year full warranty which covers all parts and labor. Yes, a battery is included.

SV-1 Advanced Features

Under the hood, SV-1 packs a lot of power, much more than is apparent at first glance. All the features described below can be set once using the XID Control Panel program and then stored in non-volatile memory inside SV-1.


SV-1 provides the following timing capabilities. All timers have a one (1) millisecond resolution.

Feature What It Does
Reaction Time Timer Measures the participant's reaction time. The timer is triggered by the computer.
Experiment Timer An experiment-wide timer is provided. The computer can reset this timer and inquire at any moment about how much time has elapsed.
Trial Alarm Some experiments require that a trial begins at fixed, precise intervals. SV-1 provides a trial triggering capability. The computer sets the period, e.g. 700 milliseconds, and then simply waits for the trigger to arrive from SV-1.
Port Test Timer Intended to measure any transmission delays that may be introduced by the operating system or USB-to-serial port converters.


Accessory Connector

SV-1 sports an Accessory Connector that can be configured in many ways and entirely via software. It can function in one of two modes: Reflective or General Purpose.

When in Reflective Mode, the pins on the Accessory Connector reflect the status of voice key. The following options are offered:

Reflective Mode When Voice Key Button is Detected...
Continuous ...the corresponding pin on the Accessory Connector goes high and stays high until the voice level drops below the threshold.
Single Pulse Mode ...a single pulse is sent on the corresponding pin. The pulse's duration can be adjusted.
Double Pulse Mode ...a pulse is sent on the corresponding pin; when voice key drops below threshold, a second pulse is sent.

The logic of the output pins can be set to active high or active low.

When in General Purpose Mode, the Accessory Connector can be used for general purpose input/output (I/O) operations.

  • Any I/O lines can be used for either input or output.

  • Lines selected for input can be pulled high or pulled low.


Serial Port

SV-1's serial port operates at 9600, 19200, 38K, 56K, or 110K baud. Three different data communication protocols are currently supported:

  • SV-1 / XID. This mode supports all the timing features described above.

  • Cedrus RB Series mode. This mode emulates the popular Cedrus RB Series response pads.

  • ASCII / MEDx mode.

An additional feature allows the user to lock the Threshold and Delay dials on the front of the SV-1 to prevent an accidental change.
